I read this book's companion, Backseat Saints, and enjoyed it much more. Technically this was the first book - though in my opinion it doesn't really matter what order you read them in. The book was kind of interesting at first because I was discovering the connections between the two books... In the end though, I feel like the story was a little bland. The story itself jumps between past and present time, which keeps things interesting but at times I felt like I was reading the same things over and over again as the main character, Arlene, constantly worried. Every time Arlene glimpses back into the past we get a little more of the story...and it unfolds. It turns out, in the end that Arlene hasn't kept her promises to God after all. She promised not to lie,...but in reality, all she did was lie to herself.
Meh, it was okay - But if I were going to pick between the two - Backseat Saints was much better!

Great southern girl book, and really a gets better as you get into it. Reminded me of Fried Green Tomatoes a little.
Loved it. Joshilyn Jackson has a unique way to turn a phrase and twist a reader's arm and make them beg for more. Can't get enough of her storytelling. Though this one was not as good as Between Georgia, I will continue to read everything she writes.
Although this had been recommended to me several times, I had low expectations. I picked it up as a placeholder book between several "heavier" books that I am really excited about.
Boy, was I surprised! It was really charming. The characters were well-done and the plot was not the cliche I was expecting. It's not high literature or anything, but it was definitely a cut above similar books.

the first joshilyn Jackson book I ever read, and probably the best.
I read this book while vacationing/camping last week. It took me 3 days. Often funny. Certainly entertaining. Interesting and insightful in terms of dysfunctional family dynamics. Her characters are well developed and the story clips along at a comfortable pace. I enjoyed her writing style and plan to read her other novels. Here's hoping this debut wasn't merely a fluke.
This book was good...there were definitely some parts I thought were better than others. I listened to the audio version and as someone else said, there were weird musical bits at the end of chapters. At first I thought it was background noise—I did get used to it.
