I love Joshilyn Jackson. I just love her and her writing style. Gods in Alabama will not disappoint you if you've read her other books. If you haven't, this is a good one to start with. It is typical broken female narrator with a juicy story that turns out completely, COMPLETELY, different that what you'd imagined.
Ingeniously written and a rare find - spent many night up late. Each chapter ends so that you cannot help yourself in continuing on. Love, family, mystery, and murder. A must read!
Definitely an enjoyable read, mostly due to the main character's quirky narration. But things wrapped up too smoothly for me in the end. There were so many pieces to the plot that could have been used more, like the main character's interesting jealousy for her cousin. Instead, these pieces were sort of washed over and nothing much was done with them, and everything was simply resolved at the end.
Sharp humor, great story, well developed characters. I really enjoyed reading this.
When I first started reading Gods in Alabama it felt a lot like another book I read recently called, Down Home Murder by Toni L.P. Kelner. Both main characters are girls from the South who leave home and move up North where they become educated, leaving their country-bumpkin pasts behind. But once the story got going in Gods in Alabama I found myself really enjoying it. I did however, find the main character in this book to be a bit annoying with her no sex/no lying policy to atone for a misdeed that had happened over a decade earlier. She seemed to be very immature, which made it difficult for me to relate to her.
Mixed bag. Some great descriptive language and interest points, yet I found it overall lacking. Dunno why. I might try another of hers and see how it pans out.
3.5 stars
I really miss this author's early work and this one is a great example of why she became a firm favourite of mine.
We meet Arlene, who for the past 10 years have kept her promise to God not to fornicate, lie or ever EVER go back to Alabama as long as he will keep her deepest darkest secret hidden. And its worked, until now.........
As with all her earlier work this is set in the South, full of quirky off-beat characters that will charm you into liking them even if they have done bad things.
Had I read this in a shorter space of time I would probably have given it a full 4 stars.

An enthralling and entangling story about secrets, non-lies, and unconditional love.
"There are gods in Alabama: Jack Daniel's, high school quarterbacks, big tits, and also Jesus. I left one back there myself, back in Possett. I kicked it under the kudzu and left it to the roaches."
