This book was hard to read. Not only because of the shear amount of concepts packed inside but also because of the language used. Being a non-native English speaker, reading it almost turn pleasure into a chore. I have persevered and really liked it. My own understanding of many ideas presented in a very clever way has broaden thanks to Peter Watts. I will continue Firefall series to find out more.
You will like this book if you're looking for a hard sci-fi with a spin on consciousness and perception with loads of biological vocabulary used to describe it!
PS. I would also read the Notes & References where Watts speaks of the background research or events that has sparked the ideas in the book.

I did not think a piece of science fiction could make me think this much about the nature of intelligence and consciousness yet here we are.
you can definitely tell that peter watts is a trained scientist because so many of his ideas feel incredibly well researched and based on scientific theories.

Great fun read. Don't be put off by the fact that it has vampires in it - it is very sci-fi and not fantasy at all. Intelligence plays a large part in this book with vampires with 100 IQ more than humans, the lead protagonist has half brain half computer and the AI units whom are smarter still. What's more there are aliens that I wont describe here for fear of spoiling. Book can be downloaded free of charge on the authors website.
