It must have been at least 10 years ago when I first watched the moonlight sonata episode. Pleasantly surprised that it was better than I remember.. still my all-time favorite Conan case.

For a racial stereotype, the whole "I pretended to be my brother and no one noticed I was a girl" thing is sure used a lot in Asian entertainment.
I solved 2 out of 3 cases and I can confidently say I'm also an amazing detective/genius.
I really didn't like The Moonlight Sonata case. It wasn't good enough to take that much space in the volume. I liked the other case better.

Always a big fan of the cursed piano case. It was my favorite one when I first watched the anime and it’s my favorite one in this volume. The drama and heartbreak of the whole thing is just really well done.

This volume covers 3 stories (or 0.5 + 1 + 0.5 cases if we’re being specific). The festival case from the previous book is wrapped up, Jimmy and the gang travel to a quiet island town to deal with a mysterious request (and a murderous piano?), and a hostage case related to a soccer player ends in a cliffhanger.
While the cases themselves are complicated and interesting, Jimmy’s cover is getting thinner (especially in this volume) and as an adult reader my interest is wavering a bit because of that paradox. I’m starting to have a hard time believing that Jimmy should be able to get away with his alias for much longer because of all the repeated close calls. (Come on Rachel, aren’t they starting to add up?)
But... despite my qualms about Jimmy's not-so-secret secret identity, I still love the cases enough to have the next few volumes on hold at the library! Hopefully Volume 8 feels stronger than Volume 7.

Gosho Aoyama, Clase Closed, vol. 7 (ViZ, 1994)
This is an interesting volume in that unlike most of those we've seen so far, the majority of it is taken up with one large story; a serial killer is at loose on an island with a cursed piano whose owner committed suicide twelve years ago. It's done pretty well until we get to the big reveal, which contains the first really huge flaw I've seen in the series (I can't discuss it without revealing the ending, obviously, but let's say a much-overused mechanism in mystery fiction is used here in a way that is almost impossible to believe). We get the first half of the next story, which is stronger: a girl shows up claiming to be Jimmy Kudo's girlfriend, but Conan's never seen her before in his life-- who is she and what does she want? (And can Rachel get through the case without killing her?) Not as strong as we've been seeing, but it's still a fun series. ***
