The lack of dragons felt incredibly out of place in a book that claims to be part of McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series, and much of it read more like travelogue or historical diary than science fiction. I felt quite bored through the first half or so and never found myself entirely entertained even after that point. All in all, certainly not my favorite of McCaffrey's novels. Rill's and Alessan's romance provided no relief and was more depressing than happy.
