I found the beginning slow. Once it did pick up, it was good. I wasn't expecting the ending.

Thrillers en whodunnits zijn mijn guilty pleasures. In mijn tienerjaren heb ik er honderden verslonden. Ik las ook alleen maar misdaadromans want hey, wat moest je met een roman die gewoon de geschiedenis uit de doeken deed of de gebeurtenissen in het leven van een of ander personage. In dat opzicht ben ik wel compleet veranderd en het valt mij op dat het moeilijk is om een goed, spannend boek te vinden dat literair gezien ook nog eens de moeite waard is. Zo ook hier. En ja, ik heb het graag gelezen, maar meer als een soort van ontspanning, een leuk tussendoortje. Maar als ik dan uiteindelijk zie hoe de puzzelstukjes op hun plaats vallen en ik niet echt verbaasd ben over de afloop... De personages zijn van karton en redelijk ongeloofwaardig, dat gezaag ook dat iedereen wil dat Nathan zich laat nakijken want hij zou suïcidale gedachten hebben, pfff. En dat er iets aan de hand was met dat schilderij dat niet van de muur mocht, dat wist mijn kleine teen al na 2 minuten. Voer voor de meute.

Jane Harper captures you right from the first chapter and there is no way you can put the book down until the end. So many twists and turns and just so well written it keeps the reader captured throughout - you think you’ve solved it and then something else happens and you know you’re wrong. An excellent read!
Jane Harper knows how to write a story that keeps you guessing. Her characters are all so well developed. And the sense of place is amazing.

Harper captures the "Australian" in the characters, particularly with the conciseness of any conversation or banter between the males. I could just hear the "'strawn" accent when reading this.
Each character slowly has their story exposed as you move through the plot, but not so slowly as to induce boredom; it's just enough to keep the story moving along and to nicely build the tension towards the payoff.
Recommended to anyone who is missing the Outback, or for those who enjoy a character-driven yarn.

I can’t wait to read Jane Harper’s first two books because I thought this one was great. This is as much a slow-burn family mystery as it is a thriller. And I loved that. As I read, I felt the loneliness and desolate conditions of the Western Australian outback. And the fear of being alone in such harsh territory. .
We meet two brothers, Nathan and Bub, at a remote fence line that separates their cattle ranches. The only other thing there is their brother Cam, who is lying dead on the ground. .
I felt like I was right there with Nathan Bright, the eldest son, as he navigated through the unforgiving landscape of the outback and of his own life there as he struggles with his brother’s sudden death. It is left to him to unearth the mystery of Cam’s death. And to uncover how and why Cam died, Nathan might have to traverse the harshest terrain of all..his own family. I loved this book with an ending I didn’t see coming! I have a new auto-buy author now. 😊❤️
