My fantasy-loving readers who are also into mythology and gods are going to love this series! I'll definitely be recommending it to them.

Thank you to NetGalley and Disney Publishing Worldwide for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book so much. It reads almost like a direct continuation of the previous series (The Shadow Runner) just with a different protagonist. This increased my enjoyment as well because I think that Cervantes' narration style works much better with Ren than with Zane. I also loved where Cervantes took Ren's character, this bubbly, "Pollyanna-ish" girl who is also one of the most powerful godborns with the power of shadows that might make her travel down a dark path. I eagerly anticipate the sequel.

I'm happy that this was shorter than the Storm Runner books (they were all over 400, this is barely over 300). I'm also very happy that this is told in third person so you aren't in Ren's head all the time. It was quick and easy to read. I overall liked Edison and Monty.

I like Ren maybe a little better, but I still don't think I like her. I don't find her interesting to read about. It's said multiple times that she's the most powerful godborn ever, but she isn't. She has potential to be, but she's not there yet. She can do things with shadows and burn people with a rope. Not all that powerful. And I really do not understand why Ah-Puch likes her so much. It's a weird development for me.

Edison's power needs to be explained better. He calls it the vanquisher but it's almost always used to make protective barriers instead of vanquishing things.

I'm a bit confused about the bad guys. They're called lords but are also gods, but those are different things to me but used interchangeably. It would have been nice to get a bit more Aztec and a bit less Maya. Maybe in the next one.

If you're able to, you should read J.C. Cervantes's story in The Cursed Carnival because that is mentioned at the beginning, though it's still comprehensible if you don't.
