It took a long while, but I've finally finished this collection! I do admit I skipped over a number of stories, mostly those that relied heavily on temporary context to be funny/interesting. But those stories I read, I over all enjoyed. Had a good time. Most of the stories and the poems definitely work best when read aloud.

I think I'm really not well suited to Poe's writing style. The language is a great barrier for me and I subsequently cannot hold a picture in my head of what is happening. Of the six short stories I trudged through, before calling it a day, "The Black Cat' was genuinely outstanding. Not only was it more accessible, but it was right up my alley. It was very reminiscent of 'Pet Semetary' by Stephen King and I 'licked the plate clean' - so to speak. I already DNF'd this once but desperately wanted to try and connect with his stories because of his prolific reputation. However two attempts could not get me through and I'll just have to watch modern adaptations to acquire the narrative in a more appropriate way.

DNF. I could not move past The Black Cat. That story was so unnecessarily evil and gross that it was the final nail in the coffin. This was already on top of Poe’s 7 line-long sentences, convoluted way of writing that requires full attention, and pointless stories.

whoever thought it would be a good idea to start off an edgar allan poe selection with ‘the gold bug’ deserves serious jail time, i think it has ruined poe’s reputation in my books
