This was a very quick read, even with the subject matter being quite heavy. I'd read a few reviews saying this sheds light on what's going on in Mexico at the moment and is a fascinating story and all that jazz. And I can't deny, it definitely gives you an insight into Mexico the way evening news don't, but to me it seemed more like a story about growing up in fear and with regulated life. In the end it did feel like a superficial novel, not truly going into depth about why girls are kidnapped and become slaves or how the society works, something I might have been a lot more interested in.
Also about women's lives with a shocking amount of violence, but this has a point of view and a narrative. A lot of story around the violence and a lot of context. Beautiful prose, exceptional scene-setting.
Rounding up to 3 stars to acknowledge an emotional treatment of the somewhat new-to-me issue of drug lords’ child trafficking in Mexico. But as a novel, generally, I couldn’t believe how tough it was to get through the 200+ pages. Part One of the three parts was unnecessarily slow, with a lot of repetition.
Won this in a first reads giveaway. This was a good book, but one I don't think I could read again. It deals with incredibly difficult material. That material was handled tastefully without being glossed over. I admire Clement's ability to write about such rough concepts in a powerful yet respectful way. I'm glad I read this.
My first book by Jennifer Clement, certainly not my last. I was so tired, wanted to go to bed, but had to read it to the end. The writing is excellent and the story is quite something. I can't judge, because I only know about Mexico, what I've learned from the news, but this seemed very real to me and devastating. That people want to leave this country to survive and to protect their loved ones, should not only be understandable, but also something to support completely. Everyone who stays there and has to survive under the circumstances the characters in this novel live in, has my deepest respect. The female protagonists in this novel are fantastic!

Though I appeciate the message and depiction of the important and horrific realities of Mexican women, I didn't really enjoy the style of the narrative. I couldn't really get into the story because of it. I didn't mind the missing quotation marks and such, but the overall voice of Ladydi seemed a bit uninterested in the whole story. Maybe it was an intention that main character was thinking like: "this is what it is and that's all" but it wasn't the best for me. Ladydi showed emotions only few times throughout the book, but maybe that's just me being blind.
Overall this book broke my heart because of its content regardless of the form. It is horrible to know that the things happening in this book are real for some people and are still happening. Prayer for the Stolen is a really important book with lot of heavy but unfortunately real topics. I recommend it but with a disclaimer that the writing style won't suit everybody.
