The first time I read this was in 4th grade because I was an obnoxious gifted kid LOL. I didn't finish it that first time though, although I did a couple years later and I've read it a few times since. It's always stuck with me and I'll always come back to it. Charlotte Brontë can really capture the atmosphere of a scene, this is so well-written. I loved Jane's sense of freedom the most. When she was bored at Lowood she just set off, when her man turned out to be married she set off, when the priest was about to set off to India with her she set off, eventually returning to where she felt the most love (with Mr Rochester yup #OTP ). It's a testament to Brontë's writing that the book was able to do a beautiful psychological profile of Jane without ever relying on her traumatic backstory or shocking dramatic events to make her progression more story-like (although to be clear this novel has its share of both of those things), her growth as a character is natural and you can see her transform from a quiet, put-upon introverted young girl to someone who learns to speak for herself and take her life into her own hands through doing her own thing and not letting anything or anyone chain her anywhere. I think I liked that aspect of it the most even as a kid because I was always so scared to really live but I feel like she learned and loved and grew so much and I really liked that. This is like a real true exemplary bildungsroman + the blueprint for many female self discovery novels !!!!

I must confess the preface had me a little worried. It used such big words I thought all the book was going to be like that and make my life harder as English is my second language, but this wasn't the case.
All in all the book is really slow but I loved the plot twists and Jane as a character is formidable. The physiognomies described are really detailed and I liked that, but above all I loved how Jane is described as rather plane as opposed to our very beautiful main characters that we're used to.
I love when such old books are still very current and become fun reads.
