I just couldn’t get into this book after finishing the first. I blame the pace mostly but also none of the characters really moved beyond their original story in the first book so it was  dependent on the plot, but aside from being “interesting” (in a look at our shiny space laser way) it wasn’t engaging. I just powered through to find out what happened at the end but even after finishing the book I didn’t really care.

I wanted it to be more about the characters like the first book.

Only reason this book isn't better than the first one is the ending. Man, what a let-down. Joseph Severn's death felt unnecessary, would've been cooler if they chased him through the Core instead of trapping him on Earth since his physical death didn't amount to much. I will say it was cool when he used the erg to form a force field around himself. Still a little confused about how everything was tied up. The big reveal that is was the Core all along doesn't really make sense logically. Like how the "Ousters" were really cybrids. Um, how? Where did they come from? How did the Core build all the stuff necessary for the invasion, where did they even put all this stuff together. Also, Joseph Severn should have been Empathy, it was the only thing that really explained his visions. Other than that though, the beginning and middle were really good.

Brilliant book.
Perhaps up there with Dune.

Another book on Audible and this one was long. Over 21 hours of listening here as Simmons expands on the titanic and galaxy spanning space opera he created.
You get more of the operation of the Hegemony of Man and a greater look at the Technocore.
More questions and answers about the Shrike and the cult who worship him.

There is a lot on the Keats persona which can drag a touch but that's my taste alone.

Otherwise after a slow start this finishes up nicely as a good instalment to the Hyperion Cantos.
