dark emotional mysterious fast-paced

Either Gaston Leroux or his translator is a little overfond of ellipses and some of the schemes and contraptions sort of threaten either one's suspension of disbelief or the tone, but reading the Phantom's final monologue at the end, you understand what it is about this story that's inspired so many adaptations over so many years.
dark mysterious

I’m aware this is a classic and hence made into a musical and movie but like this was hard to understand and follow. Like if I hadn’t seen the movie, I probably wouldn’t have understood anything 😅

A misogynistic parody, that is what this was!
Dreadful characters, ridiculous logic, cheesy "romance", never ending final part.
Everyone that does not agree with the author's solutions is considered senseless, including the case investigators and the Ministry of Arts. I will never read this author again.

The Phantom of the Opera was a mysterious and tragic book, with the first half being more tense and mystifying, and the second half being more character driven. The almost mystery novel vibe was something I was pleasantly surprised by, and even though I already knew the rough plot line from the musical, it still pulled me in and engaged me.
Raoul's character was much more developed in the novel as well, and gave me a lot more insight into his motives and character, as opposed to the play where he's a bland knight in shining armor. He's portrayed as a naive boy with a innocent heart who has an intense love for Christine bordering on obsession.
Erik on the other hand was portrayed slightly darker, but none the less tragic. Reading about his motives and past more in depth allowed me to emphasize with him more, and his obsession with Christine. He really is quite a tragic character.

This bold and dramatic tale of a tragic man was an incredibly captivating book to read. I found that the overall mystique that overlays the narrative incredibly enjoyable, and the captivation of this  dramatic and sinister villain of the opera was quite enticing. As the story progresses, one can really see the tragic nature of the book’s antagonist in
Erik. Whilst his actions were done so out of desperation and obsession, there is also a sorrowful nature to his character. I loved seeing how hsi rejection warped him into what he had become, and the various mechanisms by which he enacted his devious machinations upon the opera were quite intriguing. I found myself remorseful and also somewhat disturbed witnessing his isolation, and ultimately what it drove him towards. Erik is certainly the highlight of reading this book.
With regards to the rest of the cast, I feel as if they were only alright in comparison. Their characterisations were not as strong in my opinion, and I did not care for the directors of the opera company and their money troubles.

The dark and mysterious tone of the book overall was incredibly interesting to me and I quite enjoyed it.

As for the rest of the book, I feel as if it certainly hastens in pace and intrigue towards the end of the book, but the prelude was not too lengthy. The narration style of the book was interesting, and I found it slightly strange to follow at points, but it was still largely comprehensive. The writing style and prose were elegant and also quite understandable.

Overall, incredibly entertaining. Highly recommend.
