This really galloped along in a very I-need-to-know-what-happens-next-but-I-also-don’t-want-to-know-because-I-do-know-it-will-be-awful type of way.

It really really bothered me how two characters in this book actually say “ILU” out loud to each other which is something I don’t believe that real humans do.

The Silence of the Snow was a strong and emotional read. It tells the story of the relationship that developed between Rory, an anaesthetist, and Jody, a first year doctor at the same New Zealand hospital. However, this is not a romance. Two aspects really stood out to me. The first is the powerful emotions packed into this novel - love, fear, grief, shame, uncertainty, responsibility, regret - and the author’s ability to have the reader feel them the way her characters did. The second is the way it highlighted the working conditions of doctors, particularly junior doctors in a hospital setting - their long working hours, the toll the job takes on them, and what happens when something goes wrong. I thought that this storyline was handled really well, with a great deal of compassion. The author is also a full time doctor in a large New Zealand hospital, so very much knows that which she writes. This book made me think. Is it fair to require doctors to work such long hours and to then blame them when mistakes inevitably happen? And is it fair to patients having to be treated by doctors who are exhausted and simply unable to give the care and attention needed? It’s also a book that got me in the feels with characters whose stories I know will stick with me.

Definitely a 4.5 star book. This book was really great with the medical aspect and the discussions around mental health and addiction. It is a heart wrenching novel that I could not put down.
