I really wanted to like this because I loved Felicity in the first book and I want to see her succeed in fulfilling her dream of studying medicine, but unfortunately I'm having a hard time becoming invested in this story. Maybe I'll give it another go some other time.

a good book, though i prefered a gentleman's guide to vices and virtue. still, i enjoyed seeing a female perspective set in the 18th century that was quite different from what i expected.

ok but seriously—i love the characters! felicitty is more of your typical feminist-in-a-sexist-world that you can find more and more nowadays, who casts off girly things like dresses and makeup and parties in favor of 'unladylike' things that get her hands dirty. and, that's all well and good, but johanna? she is proof that one can like girly things like cosmetics and fashion, and it doesn't make you any less of a badass. that is something that is not expressed enough in historical ya, and it is so important imo. there is not one way to defy the patriachy, and each way is just as effective.

anyways, this was great.

I liked this book a lot more when I read it again the second time. everything I remembered about it originally, which wasn't much, seemed very boring. But this time I took the time to read it, annotate it, and listen to it as well, via audible. This made the story much more engaging and I found that this book was very adorable, a very nice little girl group with so much love and representation for themselves and other women. It was very cute and empowering. Highly recommend I'm eager to read the next one, doing the full reading and listening and annotating that I've done for the 1st and 2nd books in this series.
