I’m usually not one for reading Christian romances, but what I appreciated about this one is that it didn’t shy away from the reality of the world, or sex. I’ve seen reviews calling this book filth for facing the realities of child trafficking and prostitution, and the female lead being a product of both. But this is what makes Angel so real, and what makes you root for her, along with her inability to have children and her sense her only true worth is her body.

I loved that Michael saw beyond all that (one of the few men that would), but I didn’t like this sense so much that God was telling him to do it. I didn’t much like the brother-in-law, Paul, but his story was one that highlights the hypocrisy of so many men at that time.

I mostly loved the end, but I didn’t care much for what I’d call the rather miraculous thing that happened for Michael and Angel/Sarah. I’d have liked to imagine them going on without that, and continuing to love each other, no matter what.

Still, can’t wait to see how the movie version holds up!

It took awhile for me to like this book but I ended up loving it. Such a powerful story and picture of the gospel. All of the characters are so lovably flawed. Not a big fan of Francine River’s writing style ( a LOT of telling rather than showing) but it was an easy read and an approachable book for anyone (perf for book club).

naive, theologically block-headed, ahistorical, irresponsible. fun read though. i do get the appeal, and it occasionally gets things right.
