From a politic standpoint this is definitely one of the more indicting ones and one of the ones most willing to examine the pitfalls of society In HR. I find that aspect of the book more compelling than the romance, it was a little Insta love but the relationship they built after they were married was really heartwarming

3.5 stars, and I honestly don't know if I'm giving it that rating because it truly wasn't a 4-star read, or because I've been so scattered and busy the past week that it made the story seem scattered too. It was good, just not as good to me as the others in the trilogy.

The radical reformist and the lady mine owner... meet in front of the town church, butt heads repeatedly, and eventually fall in love.

Patricia Gaffney's an amazing writer so it's hard to criticize... but the romance in this one didn't really work for me. Both leads were way too obstinate and immovable and I really didn't get invested in their relationship at all. The writing was great, the romance not so much.

This was a difficult story to rate. On the one hand, I enjoyed revisiting the small village of Wyckerley. I liked Sophie and Connor, at first. I was happy to see Christy and Anne from [b:To Love and to Cherish|525620|To Love and to Cherish (Wyckerley Trilogy #1)|Patricia Gaffney|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388980402l/525620._SY75_.jpg|681906]. Because I read this book out of order, I was reminded to start [b:To Have and To Hold|525622|To Have and To Hold (Wyckerley Trilogy, #2)|Patricia Gaffney|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1309201518l/525622._SX50_.jpg|776433] in the near future. I wanted to know more about Sebastien and his wife, Rachel. They were mentioned often enough that I wanted to know how their relationship developed.

I found Ms. Gaffney wrote a credible romance with our two MCs loving each other but having issues with class differences. Sophie's and Connor's pride limited their relationship from escalating on more than one occasion. When they were unhappy with each other, the gloves were off. Words were said that I found hard to forgive. In that respect, this historical romance was more realistic than most. At the same time, I understood why readers found Connor and Sophie hard to like.

If you have a soft spot for the town of Wickerley but enjoy your HRs lighter and with less tension, stop with [b:To Love and to Cherish|525620|To Love and to Cherish (Wyckerley Trilogy #1)|Patricia Gaffney|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388980402l/525620._SY75_.jpg|681906]. There were moments of angst but Christy was a sweetheart.
