It’s been long overdue for the critical lens Candice brings to the forefront in Red Lip Theology about the implications of the Black church on Black girls and women’s existence. There are nuances to the plight of Black women and our relationship to spirituality. If you're a Black woman practicing faith, honoring your inner gangsta this book is for you. If you're a Black woman who believes in unpacking the nuances of faith and feminism this book is for you. If you are a Black woman ready to have a reckoning about your personal spiritual journey this book is for you. Candice's sheer audaciousness, authenticity, and vulnerability within each chapter will impact any Black girl or woman who loves God ferociously and desires to walk in her truth unapologetically.

The book that I didn't know I needed! This is a breathe of fresh air. TO know that someone else thinks how you feel man its a good feeling. Thank you Candice. I am Christian as I am Feminist as I am black.

I love this book! She writes in such a fun, approachable, and relatable way. I find myself laughing at her sharing stories, cheering in agreement with her statements, and frustrated with the same things she is. If you are a woman who has been hurt by toxic theology, a male-dominated church, or the oppressive Christian world, you will get so much out of this book!

Beautiful combination of theological reflections and autobiography.
I also lost my mom as a young woman and learning about womanism and womanist theology was a huge part of rebuilding my relationship to my faith and personal ethic for how I move through the world as a Black millennial Southern woman of faith. The author reads the audiobook and going on a long drive with this book was like having a long conversation with a sister-friend where no topic is “too much.” It’s real, raw, and I found myself saying “Amen” and “that’s right!” like I was in somebody’s pew. Can’t wait for the next book!

Red Lip Theology, part memoir and part theological discussion, is honest, raw, and unapologetic. Candice walks us through her life- the good, the bad, and the ugly- tying all of it to the development of her theology. She has a clear voice and she tells her story with wisdom, wit, and humor.

Several of Candice’s essays revolve around her mother, a single mom who brought Candice up in the church. A church that shamed her mom for not being married and her by extension. She talks about the strength and faith her mom gave her, how she encouraged her and loved her. She talks about her grief when her mom died and the impact it had on her life and academic career.

Candice talks about the choices she’s made and how they all made her who she is today. She talks about how the church and pastors let her down time and again, but she also talks about her “spiritual care squad” and how important they are to her life.

I don’t see the world from the same viewpoint as Candice does, but this was such a good read for me, both encouraging and challenging. I won’t agree with all of her conclusions, but that’s not what she’s asking. I think she’s asking us to reevaluate how we see and relate to God and each other and hopefully grow in the process.
