This book was so fast paced that it really felt like I was in the story with them! You barely have time to process the events as everything moves so quickly but it felt so real because that’s what the main character (Nou) is going through. She doesn’t have time to process things and has to keep going for her family in order to keep them safe. It’s difficult reading about their experiences and what they saw, especially at such a young age but I absolutely loved Nou’s resilience. She always put her family first even when faced with impossible choices but doing nothing had its own risks and consequences. This book will have you bear witness to the cruelty of people during war but also the love of a family who just wants to be protected and secure. It gives you a unique insight of the events that occurred in Hmong History as well as what refuges went through in order to survive
