A strong and important book. Kind of like the work I'm doing to bring Native studies and Southern studies together, Gary's work makes a powerful and persuasive case for the presence and significance of a "minority" population that has been rendered largely absent from Southern studies. His beautifully structured study examines sexual otherness in mid-20th-century Southern fiction by Capote, William Goyen, Richard Wright, Lillian Smith, Harper Lee, and Carson McCullers.
