i love her.
i adore her. ugh she's insanely such a talented poet aaa

her poems are unlike the others, its lyrical, its stunning, breath taking, all of the above!!
this is my most annotated paperback i owned! i love taking my time to digest the beautiful sentences and write my opinions on them.

cried a little when i was reading a certain poem that is very obvious that it had written for sue. MY HEART- i cant

hereby, one of the poem that i cherish till this day,
The moon was but a chin of gold
A night or two ago,
And now she turns her perfect face
Upon the world below.

Her forehead is of amplest blond;
Her cheek like beryl stone;
Her eye unto the summer dew
The likest I have known.

Her lips of amber never part;
But what must be the smile
Upon her friend she could bestow
Were such silver will!

And what a privilege to be
But the remotest star!
For certainly her way might pass
Beside your twinkling door.

Her bonnet is the firmament,
The universe her shoe,
The stars the trinkets at her belt,
Her dimities of blue.

A Word
A word is dead
When it is said,
Some say.
I say it just
Begins to live
That day.

Emily Dickinson

I've read this collection of poems by Emily Dickinson. This collection was divided into four subjects on which the poems were written: Life, Love, Nature & Time and Eternity.
It is a timeless classic collection, a poem for everyone. It's gorgeous.

I read this via Dailylit, which is a good site for reading those classics you've been meaning to pick up, but haven't been able to sit down with. It's hard to rate poetry - so I won't try. I didn't connect with very many poems in this collection, mostly because Emily was so influenced by her religious upbringing, and I'm agnostic, but that doesn't mean Emily wasn't great at what she did or a wonderful poet of her time.

This is the edition of Dickinson's poetry to buy. Do not accept imitations. Other editors have access to only a few of her works and change some of her punctuation. A poet of Dickinson's caliber deserves no alterations.

Fantastic poetry.

i've been reading these for years. there have always been a few that took me by surprise, but lately i find this whole collection to be a really astonishing experiment in language - it's taken me years to see how modern she is (for you dickinson fans, i'm sure you're saying, well, DUH!). i say this because her work really is a kind of minimalism. she seems to to have more patience than most poets. she waits until the perfect formation of sounds and meanings emerge in just the right crystalline formation, and then she stops. and if you are also patient, you begin to see how perfectly each one is shaped, conceived, delivered. i also applaud her for never using titles...the poems are all numbered.

summer (august) of 2012 -

i'm finally getting around to setting some of these wonderful poems to music - i'm writing for string orchestra, piano and mixed choir.

i've chosen the following poems to set:

#254
#446
#447
#1444
#1448
#1676
#1659
#1654
#1655

and so far, i have composed music for:

#254
#446
#447
#1448

ideally, i would like to have seven to set in a suite.

forgot to update this - set the 9 poems, and it was performed last december. i'm finally getting a recording of the work to check out - looking forward to seeing it (it was videotaped) ... i was so busy conducting the work that i hardly had time to experience it with any clarity.

So lovely. Nearly thirteen years after I first discovered Emily, I still love her best.
