I discovered this book (and a few other recent reads of mine) based on recommendations of 5-star reads from BookTuber GabbyReads. She recently did a video on books she suggested that she based off of songs from The Tortured Poets Department (this book was considered “loml” if you’re curious—one which I wholeheartedly agree with).
Someone else on here described this book as “delightfully strange and moving.” I couldn’t describe it better if I tried. I adore how it’s a love story but with magical realism aspects. “Shark Heart” is a completely original reading experience with a quirky writing style. Its themes of love, family, grief, nature, animals, and interconnectedness felt so profound and visceral. I wanted to grin and weep off and on. What a novel!
