I had some issues with this one. I think my main complaint is that it read 98% like a YA novel and 2% NA. It’s like the author had written the whole thing and then right before it went to print decided that it needed to be R instead of PG13 and hastily added 2.5 sex scenes and a couple of F bombs. My other complaint is that the “romance” was really rough. *spoilers* I’m sure it was clear to most people, as it was to me, that Atlas was not the main love interest because the whole romance was so forced and he was clearly the bad guy. If you are going to do a Tamlin twist, they have to at least have some chemistry. That being said, I found this book really derivative (which I don’t typically have a problem with). It was truly just ACOTAR, The Selection, and any other trial based novel (see Hunger Games) mashed up.
Now that I’ve roasted this book, I will say that I will probably read the next one. I have a long road trip and it’s easy listening. So I guess it wasn’t that bad 🤭
