A protagonist doesn't have to be likable, of course, but this guy was absolutely insufferable. I struggled to get through the first section, but after starting the other sections I found the book a lot more interesting. If you can get past the first section, it's worth finishing!

At the heart of this story, I believe it is about the universal thought that one wastes their youth, a thought that many people looking back at their college days feel. Morimi takes these thoughts and creates an extremely unique novel. Or really four novels, jumping between writing them when he got bored of one, and eventually shoved them all together in this singular book. I've never even heard of such an approach, especially in this symbolic nature of the novel of how people will always fall into their place, though the repetition, however symbolic, can be quite annoying.
This was even worse in the 2010 anime, having the same beginning 4 minutes or so, but in the anime's case Masaaki Yuasa did some ridiculous directorial work to create something great that is beyond the purpose of this review.
Symbolic and deep, though at times annoying.

I didn’t enjoy this very much, hard to define exactly why. I understand why it was repetitive and I actually liked the seemingly narrow world of the tatami room (very student life) but I think the characters trapped in their little patterns were not my favorite and I just don’t find the extraordinarily horny and lewd comic relief very comical, just flat. I also don’t think this book will stick in my head.
