The lead character is so whiny and blames everyone else for his bad decisions. If, by halfway through a narrative, you haven't hinted at an end goal, it's bad writing.
I was excited for this but the writing was so clunky and the love doll sub plot just doesn't translate well.

It is a wholly interesting book that I’d describe as the mix between “Groundhog Day” and “Notes from the Underground”, but ending on a more profane and hopeful note.
As someone who watched the anime adaptation around the end of my bachelor’s, and the book around the end of my master’s, it’s really easy to identify with the struggles and the mindset of the protagonist. And it is immensely satisfying to see him understand what is really important in life through a unique combination of circumstances.
While I personally prefer the anime over the book just because how unique the visuals of it are, this book has one of the most hopeful messages I’ve ever read such that it’s hard to give it anything less than a perfect score.
It is a masterpiece, and if it connects with you, it’ll hit harder than anything. Also go watch the anime.

So i went into the book blind, i picked it up just because ive been seeing the anime around in letterbox and i was quite surprised when i found out that it was adapted from a book.
At first i didn't totally get the premise of the book, i really wish i did from the beginning because i think i would have enjoyed it much more, still this doesn't mean that i didn't love it.
I think I'll pick the other books on the series (hopefully i find them), or even reread this one later.

I, too, was once a college student who “accomplished absolutely nothing during the two years leading up to the spring of my junior year in college,” which, of course led to its own kind of existential crisis. However, unlike the nameless narrator of The Tatami Galaxy, mine didn’t involve alternate timelines or endless copy of the same room or an infinite moth glitch (I would have remembered that).
Alternate timelines are hot right now, and the alternate presents found in The Tatami Galaxy are less “parallel worlds” than overlapping loops of the narrator’s stumbles, utterly charming at every gaffe and goof. Morimi is a master satirist of the self-obsessed college-age youth.
If you’re in the mood for a low-stakes, amusingly eccentric romp through the surreal lives, divergent from the point when a generic college student chooses among four different extracurricular activities (I cannot stress how the stakes have never been lower), The Tatami Galaxy is your ticket.
