Wow. What a trip. This book is definitely not for the weak mind. The story is raw and the topics it touches on are not for the light of heart. If you are uncomfortable with the r-word and the n-word, I suggest you skip this book. You read the title, so I shouldn't need to warn you about the drug use and abuse, but I gotta say, the scream for help from the children were frighteningly loud.

Well written and well paced, this is an almost immersive, impressively honest, and thoughtfully structured account of a troubled child’s life. Unfortunately, it is a real account.

Kasher balances his wit with the sometimes tragic and often harrowing circumstances of his upbringing. It is thought-provoking and deeply moving memoir.

The author is raw and ernest in his discussion of drug and alcohol addiction. It is an impressive thing to be able to speak so candidly about such a personal and traumatic time. It demonstrates a level of vulnerability unparalleled by most autobiographers.

It is an impressive piece of literature.

(As a slight critique and side note: There are quite a few instances when the author uses some dated and offensive language. There is certainly a contextual element, as he is recounting what he heard and said in his youth at school, etc.. Still it gave me slight pause as a modern reader. He may have been able to allude to the use of the words without writing them out so many damn times… But I digress.)
