Meg Cabot is such a charming writer, and I love her appreciation for life’s absurdities. Even better, many of the most humorous parts of this book are drawn from her actual real-life elopement to Italy.

Less charming are the somewhat dated attitudes about weight and diet culture, calling a character a “skank” just for having consensual sex between adults, and even an “r” word. I’ve read this book six or seven times but it’s been ages since the last time I read it, and it’s worth saying I don’t think I noticed these issues before. Hopefully our culture has moved on from there!

Despite this, the book has a lot of sentimental value for me as one of the first romance novels I ever read, so I was able to put aside my distaste- a charming, if flawed, light read.
