It was an amazing addition to the series and enjoyed it. I loved learning more about Marcus and his past, I just wish it was more of a focus. While it was nice to get more info from Diana’a perspective I think it took away from the main couple of the novel. The book was suppose to be about her nephew and his partner going through something huge so having her in it felt more like the author trying to stay in their comfort zone. I would have loved it if Diana was more a passing or support character in the novel instead of a major focus as she ended up being (of course Marcus was still dominate but it was weird to hear about him then the next chapter is Diana worrying about her family life).

This was good, but it felt more like a novella (with the length of a novel). It seemed a bit disjointed, and had too many plots. It was clear the author wanted to tell Marcus' story, and also have us learn more about how new vampires are made. I appreciated both of those plot points - and Pheobe's chapters were my favorite. Where I think she fell flat a bit was including Matthew and Diana's chapters. I get she wanted to keep them in and keep us in the know so the next book is set up, but I think them being more background characters would have done better for this book.

This series came highly recommended by someone who adored it, so I approached it with high hopes. I diligently read through every installment, each offering solid writing and an initially intriguing premise. However, despite the promising start, I found myself consistently underwhelmed with each book. There was something about the characters and the plot that failed to fully engage me, leaving the overall experience feeling somewhat lackluster.

I loved the slice of life feeling of this one. I liked seeing the characters I love and getting more information about them as they transition through their new normal.

A little disappointing, if I'm honest. I was happy to read it, and it was nice to revisit familiar characters, and to get a deeper look into Marcus's past, but the whole 400 pages felt meandering and slightly pointless. There was no danger, no urgency, no mystery--none of the hallmarks of the original trilogy that made it so absorbing to read. It felt like a history lesson of the American and French Revolutions that just so happened to include vampires. The last 100 pages seemed rushed, though the conclusion was satisfying at least. I hope if Harkness decides to return to this world in the future that she can tighten up the stories and imbue them with a little more of the magic that was so integral to the first three books.
