More than 40% of our behavior everyday is either habitual or is affected directly by our habits. This is because habits automate things and free up processing space for our brain so we can focus on higher-order tasks. Get your habits to work for you, and there’s no telling how far you can reach. But how do we separate good habits from bad ones?

Ask yourself – “Are the things that you are doing getting you closer to your Goal?” But getting motivated by a Goal is only one way to ensure you stick with your habit. Another way is to focus on the Process of change, rather than focusing on the goal itself. What’s the nature of your system, and how is it benefiting your life? Lastly, there is identity-based change. Who do you want to be? Ask yourself – “what would such a person do in different situations?”

Habits follow four stages – Cue, Craving, Response, and Reward.
To establish good habits - Make a cue Visible, craving Attractive, response Easy, and reward Satisfying.
To break bad habits – Make the cue Invisible, craving Unattractive, response Difficult, and rewards Unsatisfying.

Design your environment (work space, room, etc.) to make the cues obvious and future action easier. Start small, unreasonably small; as you advance, increase the amount of work; and do not give in to boredom. The greatest threat to success is not failure but boredom. Measure your habits and do not break streaks. The more you do something, the easier it will become.
