I am not a fan of Donna Tartt books, and more so Tana French so it was with great trepidation that I started reading Kala and so glad that this advertising blurb did not convince me otherwise. If anything, I think that Colin Walsh establishes a unique writing style that is apparent from the very start of the book, and a masterful characterisation.
Four stars (and not five) because:
- I thought that the story dragged at times, especially at the end ... perhaps the author's second endeavour (and I do hope that there will be many more to come) will be more tightly edited.
- There were quite a few themes at play (corruption, abuse etc) and an almost gothic darkness throughout that I thought worked fine up to the final couple of chapters where the turn of events gave the story a melodramatic feel and a rather unconvincing resolution.
