Vassell’s work feels both fresh and classic, like Tommy & Tuppence or Edmund Crispin reworked for 2024. The detectives are charming but not overly so, the characterization is crisp and clear, the plot is interesting and examines class without having a big chip on its shoulder, and also offers interesting commentary on race in Britain as well. It’s a good mystery and a fun read, though I got a bit muddled when an additional plot element appeared about 3/4 through. Thrilled to read the next installment featuring DI Caius Beauchamp.

First off, you NetGalley and Vintage Anchor for granting me access to this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book is just not my cup of tea! Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this story and found myself struggling to get through it. It was extremely slow and boring. The synopsis sounded like an amazing mystery to solve and the cover is so cute! I had such high hopes and it just did not deliver. You know it’s not good when you find yourself skimming the pages. I was left with more questions after a disappointing ending.

i realized i had dissociated through the majority of it and had no idea what was happening. not sure what about it kept triggering me but not too bothered about analyzing it. this book just wasn’t for me and that’s fine.
