Heart Berries is a beautifully written, painfully honest memoir of a First Nation Canadian writer. It's nothing like any memoir I've ever read - raw, stream of consciousness, poetic, and impossible to put down. It immersed me in a world I know practically nothing about, despite the fact that it takes place not particularly far from my home. In my experience, these qualities rarely come in one package. Heart Berries is hands down one of the best books I've read this year, maybe even in the last five years. It's not a particularly easy read and often it's a difficult one in terms of content, but it's well worth the effort and headspace. I can't wait to read more of Mailhot's work.

This challenged me a lot and I’m trying to be better about using my 1,2,3 stars. As a lover of memoir and nonfiction this is a totally different style. Poetic, haunting, unsettling, and beautiful. Also quick.

Fantastic, brilliant, brutally honest book that is deserving of all the accolades it has received!

There are so many books I love, but this connects with the heart on a different level. Beautiful, illuminating, uplifting, challenging in the best sense of the word—in the way that makes its reading necessary.

I think I’d have enjoyed the print version more than the audiobook I listened to. (The audiobook was not read by the author)

The writing is poetic and riveting without being saccharine or forces. I burned through it on a rainy day and could not put it down.
