Not perfect but don't ask me why I feel that way. But also good in many ways. The characters are so vividly real people and that is without question the best part

an absolutely unbearable protagonist. but i don't think it revels in that or is ever gleeful in such fact. to be unbearable is to be unhappy. and all of us are a little unbearable from time to time.

“'Everything is broken and messed up and completely fine. That is what life is. It's only the ratios that change. Usually on their own. As soon as you think that's it, it's going to be like this forever, they change again.”

I don’t really know how to feel about this book. A book you struggle to read but not because it is boring, more because it hurts and there’s nothing you can do about it.

This was such a beautiful and at the same time painful book to read. I loved it and couldn’t read it in large doses. Had to switch to other books to catch my breath. Amazing amazing work.

i really enjoyed this book. i read it almost in one sitting on the train, i had been struggling to get through the first half but it picked up so much in the second half. meg mason has such an amazing talent for making her characters feel so raw and real - i hated main character martha at points but could completely understand why she acted the way she does, she is flawed in such a believable way. i thought this book depicted mental health very well, especially being in a relationship with someone who is struggling. it was depressing and tough to read at times but not so much that i didn’t want to continue (like i did with a little life…), i was really rooting for martha
and was glad that the ending was happy, but not unbelievable. mason made it clear that martha and patrick still had lots of work to do, which i appreciated.

i will say that although i enjoyed the atypical timeline, it did get confusing from time to time and i kept forgetting who some of the secondary characters were.
this is the second of meg mason’s books ive read, the first being ‘you be mother’, which i enjoyed more but both were easy to read and i got very attached to the characters. i adore slice of life books, with a focus on characters rather than storylines, and meg mason writes this genre beautifully.
