screaming, crying, throwing up. being human is hard & this story broke me one million times. a devastating & beautiful portrayal of mental health challenges & the resiliency of those who stay hopeful despite it all… ❤️🩹
I don't know how it's possible for a character to be so excruciatingly self-involved and yet charming and hilarious. Ingrid and Martha's dialogues were for me the highlight and I loved their relationship. I don't believe Martha deserved Patrick and I don't know if I'm entirely pleased by how gracious he was. I did, however, like this quote: "And you have been loved for all your adult life by one man. That is a gift not many people get, and his stubborn, persistent love isn't in spite of you and your pain. It is because of who you are which is, in part, a product of your pain." However, the way she treated the people who loved her was in my view inexcusable and while perhaps explainable as being the result of undiagnosed mental illness, I don't think it made it OK.

Meget investeret i hovedpersonen og karakterene. Ikke så meget plot, men nok spændende nok karaktere til at holde mig investeret.

"There was a bar at the cinema. The film started but we never went in. At midnight, a man with a mop said sorry guys."
This is a beautiful book, despite the prevailing mood throughout being quite oppressive and dark. The main character (Martha) is likeable and infuriating at various points throughout the book.
"The music was extraordinary. The sensation of it was physical, like warm water being washed over a wound, agonising and cleansing and curative."
The other characters are multi-faceted and their own stories are interwoven in a clever fashion with Martha's.
I liked the use of "___" towards the end of the book; I felt it removed any preconceptions one might have, and also allowed you to fill it with your own context. I completed understood the author's decision to not name it.
Would recommend this book (and thanks to Clare for recommending to me!)
