Just wow. This was one of the best books I have read in a while. Mason presents a searingly profound story about mental health, family, friendship, marriage and love with such skill and style. The portrayal of mental illness is particularly and painfully honest - I have never read anything quite like it.

It was utterly and absolutely heartbreaking and painful at times, but at others it was hilarious. I read it in about five sittings and thought about it whenever I wasn’t reading it. Each time I picked it up, I sobbed copious tears but also laughed out loud.

I miss the characters already. They developed so subtly and thoroughly throughout the novel.

I am totally blown away.

Incredibly well written, really transports you into the narrator’s world. Heavy read, definitely needs to be followed by something light as your next book after this!

3.5 - Enjoyable! Like Bridget Jones but with fewer jokes and more mental illness.

This was a really good book. It starts off with the separation of the narrator, Martha, from her husband. The bulk of the novel is Martha looking back on her life and her relationships, trying to understand herself and how she came to be in the position she finds herself in. This book covers some tough subjects, like Martha's struggles with mental illness, but it's done with a light touch, and there are lots of laugh out loud moments as well. The writing is poignant and heartfelt, and I felt invested in Martha and the other characters. I also really liked the overall structure of the book, starting with the separation and then jumping back and forth to show us how it came to be. I would recommend reading this, especially if you like stories about complicated families.

chcialabym miec Patricka, ale nigdy nie chcialabym byc Martha.

Very touching read. I really liked the episodic storytelling.

An exceptional book. Very funny and profound. Great one liners. Tremendous insight, relationships that are incredibly real and plausible and amusing and terrifying. Very real in so many important ways.
