The way these include additional audio other than the words (background chatter at a party, horse hooves, birds chirping, etc) really brings these stories to life. I love that each character is done by a different person. Really helps me become invested and attached to characters. And I'd also vote for Emma Thompson to read every period piece from here on out. My goodness, she does it so well.

Emma was an immaculate introduction to Jane Austen’s work and classic lit. for me. I absolutely adored reading this book, the society and drama of Highbury was enthralling and the romances were charming. Austen’s telling of Emma was a joy to read, from the pacing to the dialogue I loved every bit of this story. I found myself laughing and filled with suspense while reading this book, which I hadn’t expected when I first opened it. Emma Woodhouse’s character really spoke to me and her growth was so beautiful to see unfold, and the ending was perfect. Emma is joining my list of favorite books!

12/29/21 update: Emma is a little harder to like this time around, especially in her pride and sense of self-worth, but that really is the point. Austen does a brilliant work of showing us a society where irrational classism is the norm. Austen’s irony, most often entertaining in the dialogue, shows how each character betrays themselves, how self interest always tramples ideals.

Miss Woodhouse is almost as delightful as Lizzy Bennet.

Almost two years later, here we are. I will be honest: I really wanted to love it. And, at first, I did. Austen does an excellent job at portraying and ridiculing the character flaws of Emma and those around her. But, honestly, it gets boring. Compared to Pride and Prejudice, there feels to be no real acute conflict (I mean, yes, Harriet, but that's insufficient) and the part where they finally do get together feels rushed. The writing is beautiful, but getting through this was honestly a struggle at times because I was just so bored... The story itself is nice, though. Worth a reread for Austen's wit but not for the narrative itself
