I find it so interesting that this is the first culture book. First published, anyway. It's definitely easier to understand the second time through with knowledge of this universe and all that comes after. But still so fascinating.

I read this because it appeared on a list of the 75 best science fiction books of all time (according to Esquire). I have to beg to differ. This book is just tedious. There are LOOOONNNNNGGGGGG fight scenes and chase scenes that go on and on without contributing anything substantive to the development of the story. I think probably 3/4 of the novel has really nothing to do with the development of the story. I will not be reading the other Culture books.
