There's a good reason people say start with Player Of Games, but still a great book
Excellent start to the Culture series
This wasn't the first time I read this book but it feels like it was. It reminded me why Iain M Banks remains one of my favourite authors.

I think I set myself up for failure by reading all the raving reviews about the Culture series. It was…fine. The tech was cool and imaginative, and I really enjoy Banks more informal writing style. However, the pacing was either breakneck or super slow, and the characters didn’t really do anything. Things just sort of happened to them. The ending was also a bit disappointing. I think my favorite part was the epilogue performing a state of the galaxy post book.
A fun and interesting first volume of "Culture" series of space opera books by Mr. Banks. Not quite a "first volume in a series," but more like the first volume set in this particular universe. And it is an interesting universe. The characters are interesting too. And facts that things don't quite go as you would expect is interesting as well. Lots of interesting stuff. I shall be reading more of these books in the future.

It's an intriguing start to Iain M Banks' Culture series, and a suitably tricky one, but I don't think it lands the same way the following books do. In the end Consider Phlebas didn't real stick with with me, though in a way that serves the novel's entire thesis...
