At about 1/3 of the way through, I just can't stomach more of this meandering, pointless plot with a main character who invites many questions but answers very few of them. I was persevering, hoping that at some point the plot might become more than a series of "out of the frying pan and into the fire" situations, but alas the Cannibal Cultists were the final, unnecessary straw. Not only do I feel they added little to the story, but the grotesque imagery feels out of place in Iain Banks non-horror works. I'm shelving this now, and moving on to something better I hope...

Amongst weakest of Culture books yet still a good book. It's not amazing like Player of Games or Excess, yet it's not mediocre... It's good. There are some stuff in there that may seem unnecessary out of context but I think this book sets up and is important background for other, better Culture books.

This book sets up a lot of what Culture actually is, in good, neutral and bad.

Interesting word but did little to pull me in. Protagonist was meh. Hmm.
