I usually live in the realm of thriller, fantasy and magic, with a little bit of contemporary sprinkled in. So this sci fi series is so out of my playing field. There was a lot of sci fi jargon that went over my head and I didn’t care for, but the story itself was interesting to me. Specifically Miller’s because of the mystery he’s trying to solve. I do enjoy different character perspectives, but I felt like Holden only became interesting closer to the end. I found his character to be kind of boring and brought the plot to a screeching halt sometimes.
Sci fi can feel overwhelming to me sometimes. It can veer off into technical territories that lose me or take me out of the story. So I have mixed feelings about this first book. I feel like I might need to reread it and then give another update later on about my rating for it. It is a popular television series now so I have hopes for it becoming more interesting. Let’s put a pin in it with 3 stars for now.

Wow!
I thought this was excellent, even if often horrifying and disturbing and disgusting. It was compelling and fantastic.

It was hard to concentrate on plot and i didn't care about characters or the "future society" at all. Holden especially was kind of infuriating.
Like it wasn't bad per se, but I've read a ton of better and bolder sci-fi. Meh.

I'm not sure what I was expecting, but a cross between noir and hard sci-fi wasn't it! There's quite a lot of potential here. The universe and setting definitely makes sense for humanity just having branched out into the solar system. The pacing in the first half was quite slow but it picks up after that. Miller is definitely not a character I expected to find in sci-fi, which made him quite a bit better. Holden and his crew are a more typical sci-fi bunch, but it's nice to see stories about people who aren't military/Starfleet/etc. and the pros and cons of dealing with that.

Not the easiest of books to start, as the story jumps between main characters frequently, but you will be rewarded for your efforts.
