"Language of flowers" is a story about mistrust, family and flowers.

Victoria is a foster child who, near the beginning of the book, is emancipated. She has lived unsuccessfully with families and in group homes. This novel is a dual storyline that traces a time when she was 9yo and had a successful placement that went horribly wrong due to multiple betrayal that you gradually learn about over the course of the story. The second storyline is Victoria's life post-emancipation: homelessness, a job, a relationship, a child, and then more mistrust and betrayal.

The thing that saves her is her knowledge of flowers and their symbolism, which she learned from her kind caregiver and utilizes in her adult life.

The story is interesting, although the characters are s bit wooden and speak in somewhat melodramatic dialogue: long silences followed by moments of profundity. It is a quick read and the Victorian dictionary of flowers at the end is charming.

4.5 stars!

Fan-tas-tic. Planning my wedding many years ago, I asked my florist to use flowers that represented love and fidelity in my bouquet and the floral decor, so I felt like I found a kindred spirit in Diffenbaugh's main character, Victoria. Of course, in nearly every other way we are completely opposite: Victoria, abandoned at birth and cycled through too many foster homes and upended adoption plans, finally finds something she can hold on to when she goes to live with Elizabeth. As they try to form a bond, Elizabeth teaches Victoria about flowers and plants, and the meaning they held in Victorian times. I loved the story line and the characters, even when the plot took a difficult twist and the people were difficult to like. Love it love it love it.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this one, but I'm glad I stuck with it!

A good book. I couldn’t get over how annoying she was as a kid but her story was very sad and cute. I liked how the book came full circle and the writing was rlly good. I think “the patient” scarred me bc I kept waiting for some twisty shit to happen

Amazing. Loved every page.
