Sad story, very informational

Got a little lost in part 3 just due to all the info thrown at me. However, great personal story about addiction from an "outsider."

I wanted to love this book but ended up kind of meh. Zimmerman's description of discovering her husband's body and the immediate aftermath with her children was deeply affecting and the strongest part of the memoir IMO. I hoped the latter half would explore how the culture of big law drives people to such extremes and the dangers of the obsessive work life it seems to require, but instead the book veered into a tangent on overprescription of stimulants in kids with ADHD? There was also basically a whole chapter describing the scene in Peter's house after his death that seemed to detail every tissue, syringe, and bodily fluid photographed in the police report... Definitely worth the read if you are interested in one woman's emotionally rich account of her family's complicated tragedy and a look at how sneaky and insidious addiction can be. But if you're looking for an investigation on drug abuse in big law, this isn't it — I hope someone does write that book sometime, because I would love to read it!

Again, a super interesting memoir and research driven book about drugs, addiction, the opioid crisis, etc. but this time from the POV of the ex-wife of a man who died because of his addictions, which no one seemed to know or acknowledge he had.

I just finished reading Smacked, by Eilene Zimmerman, and I give it 3.5 stars. The book centered around her marriage to, divorce from, and the aftermath with her ex-husband, Peter. While married, they had two kids together and by the end were basically co-habitating in misery. After discovering that one of them had been unfaithful, they decided to divorce. The book told the story of the aftermath...culminating in Peter's death and the discovery that he hadn't been sick, as he claimed, but was instead a drug addict.

This book was a solid 4 star read until I got to section 3. Section 3 was Eilene's conversations with fellow lawyers, drug addicts, and the scientists who researched drug addiction and mental illness. This section was long-winded and kind of repetitive. So the book gets a half-point taken off and is rounded down to 3 stars. But it is a good read if you're interested in learning about addiction and the aftermath. All opinions are my own.

This was a gripping and devastating book. I was struck by Zimmerman's emotional writing, and thought this shined a necessary light on an overlooked population afflicted by drug addiction and abuse.
