this is so well-written, but i am just losing my patience with creators trying to convince us that nonviolent protest will topple violent empires. also, super weird to me that IRL, the laws and public rhetoric about indoctrinating children with harmful ideas have most recently (and aggressively) been aimed at trans people, but there’s not a single mention of queerness in this book, let alone trans identity. understanding the intersections of oppression is more important now than ever.

Celeste Ng, for me, is an author who always, always sticks the landing of her books’ conclusions and themes. It was a bit of a slow start, and I wasn’t totally into the book the entire time, but Ng really follows through: there was a moment at the end of the book where I found myself thinking it’s about the choice!!!
Of course, at times this book feels a bit heavy-handed because I am living through much of what inspired this book, but at the same time it does feel particularly useful in the context of my own struggles with feeling extremely powerless with my country’s determination to be a shitshow.

I appreciated the subject matter and world issues she explored in this book! But the writing style made me feel distant and numb to the characters, which made it hard to stomach such intense and heart-wrenching topics.

God, it's incredibly validating to read this book post-pandemic (or post-the-worst-of-the-pandemic, at least), after some of the most traumatic hate crimes towards the Asian-American community. And even now, with continued rise of rampant Sinophobia in the USA. I feel seen.

3/3.5 stars. I may change this as I sit with it more, but right now this is how I’m feeling. It’s unfortunate as the subject matter is so important and timely, and I LOVED her other books, but this one just felt “meh” in the end for me.

I wouldn't say this is ground breaking, but it feels very personal and raw; about injustice and xenophobia and individuals trying to make change in a world that sees them as the other. It's a narrative very much focused on love and grief, inspired by real world events (I appreciate that the author left an afterword referencing the books she used for research).

Something about the pacing and some character writing didn't really work for me but it has left me thinking, and that is more than I can say about a lot of books.
