3.75

I give this 3.75 stars because I was surprised and actually did enjoy this
book.
I have extreeeeeemly mixed feelings about this book. I
think I've found why but I still can't 100% place it.
I *mostly* loved the characters- I thought they were
interesting to read and had good character development.
Concept & plot execution was actually probably the best
part of the whole book. I really enjoyed the fantasy world
the author came up with. I thought it was unique but it
also kinda fit into a
"stereotypical" kind of fantasy book
feel, which was actually nice to read and didn't hinder my
experience. I thought the magic system and the rituals
were so carefully thought out and it shows.
Overall I enjoyed this but I do think this should've been
one book and not two... (just my thoughts)
I have to talk about Bastien and Ailesse's relationship because it was seriously captive to lovers. It could be classified enemies to lovers, but let's be real with ourselves. Ailesse tried to kill Bastien first, then he came super close to killing her, and took her hostage for a long time and drained her of her health and allowed Jules to lash out at her. I mean, yeah I know they were after 'revenge' but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be a decent person to your hostage. Bastien even notes later on how she looks so nutrient deprived and how it was probably his fault. I just hated this aspect. And then suddenly they're in love? Like actual “love". I don't get it. It's been AT MOST A MONTH BUT I'M PRETTY SURE LESS THAN A MONTH.

I started this book as part of a readalong which I then read ahead and finished. I did enjoy the book and it was an interesting story to follow that was tied in with a little bit of mythology.
I found it interesting how the book was split up between three different POV’s but it was nice to read, as I got to have an insight on all three of those characters.
I loved the bond between two of the characters which showed their sisterhood and friendship that they have had since childhood. And I also loved the bond between three friends that brought them together from two tragic events, and shows that you can always have family even though they aren’t by blood.

There was times I was confused over what the Queen was saying about the gods. She would mention something that the gods would want them to do, and then say something completely different.
I also think it would of been nice to know a little more on the backgrounds of some characters so we had a better understanding of how the felt and their reasonings and beliefs.
There was a couple of more times I was confused with towards the end of the book. One was a sudden change of how the character acted and another was something that happened but then changed and it just didn’t make sense and wasn’t explained and left you hanging with questions like “how did that happened?” Or “that’s impossible...”

Although there was a lot of confusion, lack of character development (in the background sense) and animal deaths (thank god they weren’t graphic) I did enjoy the book. I am interested to know what happens with book 2 but not overexcited, just intrigued to see if book 2 is better, the same or worse and see how that story works out.

I do love the saying “Tu ne me manque pas. Je ne te manque pas” meaning ‘You’re not missing from me. I’m not missing from you’

I really liked this! I really enjoyed the friendship even though we didn’t get to see them together. I did not enjoy the insta love but whatever, it was kind of excused. I do wish Sabrine had some kind of romance. She was my favorite and I wish we got more of her to be honest. The guy was fine he wasn’t anything special. I thought the bone crier magic was interesting.
