Wanted to love it. But I didn’t. There’s too much action, which I didn’t even realize was a bad thing in the book...but this is Exhibit A. All the action scenes distract the reader from the timeline. What feels like an intense week (or two AT MOST) is apparently a month or longer in this book.
The magic also didn’t make complete sense to me (FYI, if anyone can clarify, I’d be eternally grateful). For instance, the bone flute gets lost so the dead cannot be ferried. They mention all the other ferriers in the world...so no other ferrier groups have flute to open their own gates? Really? Their gates just appear after the matrone of this one group plays her song? That’s so impractical. And if it were the case and their gates don’t show up, wouldn’t they know something is wrong and travel to the main group to see if they need help?
Then we have Cas...the stupid love struck boy who stands no chance. He sees his love interest is CLEARLY in love with someone else and still wants to do all he can to rescue her, take her away and beg her for a chance when SHE DOESN’T EVEN KNOW HIS NAME. “Love spell” or not, if my love interest was clearly fawning over someone else, I’d be hurt and I don’t know that I’d want anything to do with them. But that’s just me.
Overall, the magic system is such a cool idea but I believe it was quite poorly executed.

I was so excited to read this book but it let me down. I was underwhelmed with the romance. I think there was 1 to many POVs. The world and magic is really cool but the characters dull and not unique. The ending was interesting and might inspire me to pick up the next book.
This book was sooooo good! It’s right at the top of my fav books of the year. This story was told from 3 different POVs and each perspective worked together to make such a brilliantly written story. The more I read, the more I wanted to absorb this book even more. The sisterhood between Sabine and Ailesse was so heartfelt. I loved how Sabine would move heaven and earth to get to her sister. She reminds me what true friendship is all about. Bastine and Jules was such awesome characters to get to know. The love triangle was a nice touch also. Overall I loved the book and look forward to the next one.
Kind of slow dips in the middle it has a great ending but it was sort of drawn out the plot twists are nice but the stakes could be a little higher I think the second book will be good as long as they don't lean into the love triangle

I have to start this review out by saying that there’s a love triangle in this, and it’s definitely the icky sort... I feel like when it comes to love triangles, the only chance I might like it is if our main protagonist has to choose between two equally great people. In this one, like so many others, it’s a choice for the love interest of the main protagonist, so NOPE!
I really enjoyed the whole bone witch thing. It’s really different and interesting compared to other books in the genre. It’s also really well done, in that you get differing opinions from several different characters on their thoughts on the morality of it all.
The writing is interesting. It’s super fun at the beginning, I don’t think I’ve ever read a book quite like it. I will say that it does drag at points, but I always found myself being drawn back in. It’s one that doesn’t have to be amazing to be very engaging.
The characters are uniquely themselves, and I never got confused on whose perspective that I was reading (there are three different characters perspectives in this).
I don’t think the main themes and plot points are groundbreaking or anything, but it’s told in a slightly different and engaging way. I think that this could be a hit for sure. The romance wasn’t my favorite, and I think if it had been super good it would’ve saved the whole story for me. I guess, I feel mostly just neutral on this one, but it ultimately ended up being not exactly for me.

At some point in the novel, it just seemed like we were going around in circles. The concept was so interesting but the end of the book left me feeling more annoyed with character choices than eager to start the next book. I probably won't be reading the second book but I'll miss the world it was set in.
I personally really loved this book. I love the whole concept of it and all the twists and turns. It was a great book!
