I remember seeing someone rave about this fantasy on Bookstagram and adding it to my wishlist ages ago. When I saw it at Book Outlet, I decided to go e it a go.
Ailesse is a bone crier and determined to collect her final grace from a tiger shark. For each of the three animals she must kill, she collects their keen attributes. After collecting the three, she'll be able to play the bone flute and attract her amoure to her, kill him, and finally achieve her goal of ferrying the dead to either heave or hell. After all, a bone Crier's life is nothing but sacrifice. Bastien is bound and determined to kill as many of Aliesse's kind as he can, after all it was a bone crier that killed his father and left him a homeless, thieving orphan. Together with his friends, they devise a plot to kill a bone crier and finally get revenge. But will he be able to resist the pull of the woman in white?
This was good, but too stretched out. At times I could swear it was a lot of detail happening in one night, but it was over the course of a month. It all just sort of blurred together. I don't think I'll read the second in the duology.

We were 50% into the book and sh*t hit the fan and I stayed stressed for the entirety of the book. Jesus, it was too much. I loved it. I want more!

This is one of the biggest letdowns of the year. I had such high hopes for this enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance. Such high hopes...
To start positively, I really like the concept of the book and I like how the Crier's get their powers from the bones of animals -- pretty cool. Although they had to kill the animals which... wasn't great :/
The thing is, I need to like characters I'm reading about, I need to connect with them or at least care about their journey. Here, I couldn't. I was trying so hard, but they just annoyed me. Like they'd be hurt someone didn't trust them because they did one good thing, yet they were actively trying to kill them soooo why would they trust you, fool?! They were just so, so foolish. Many of their actions frustrated me and made no sense except to prolong the book. We also never got development or time for learning about them, or at least it felt this way.
I could keep going because I'm so, so sad by not liking this book, but I'll stop here.
