It was fine. I didn't really like the main relationship.... I didn't find myself cheering for anyone at some points. I think further revision before publishing would have done this book a huge favour.
"You're not missing from me, Bastien. I'm not missing from you."
This book is my most anticipated debut of the year and I have to admit i struggled at first and thought so typical of this book but man I was proved so wrong with this wonderful story! I'm excited to read the sequel. There is animal cruelty in this book so i feel like there should be a trigger warning but also its their religion. I adore Ailesse and Bastien. I dislike Sabine and Cas. Cas is like wanna be good guy but you know he's really shady. Cas is priviledged, powerful, and psychopath. Bastien is honest, humble, and natural. I was so angry because I felt like the passion wasn't there for like over half the book but then when it was there it was rushed and explosive like young love usually is, especially the first love. It almost gave me unrequited love vibes and then finally it worked out. I hope the sequel has more to other with answers to the questions left open. Who is the Owl, like Elara or Tyrus? Does Sabine do her rite of passage? Can Sabine and Ailesse save their friendship to become better sisters and rekindle their friendship in each other? Is Bastien over his revenge? How are Jules and Marcel handling their lives since the mission failed to get revenge?
Who will be Matrone in the end?

This book has been on my TBR list for months, and it was completely worth the read. Kathryn Purdie’s world building is amazing and yet she somehow managed to flesh out the personalities of all her characters too. I could feel the bite of the ocean on my skin when the girls dove in off the cliff and feel their racing hearts as their enemies closer in. I love a good friendship full of unconditional love and loyalty and this book delivered on both counts. Already have the next book queued.

if you enjoy enemies to lovers tropes, slow burn romance, a vengeful mother and the unbreakable bond between friends... this is it! this is the first book in a high stake duology series about "Bone Criers" who have a sacred duty if ferrying the dead. but when Ailesses ritual doesn't go as planned, a lot more unfolds. Bastien has had one goal his entire life, to avenge his fathers death at the hands of a Bone Crier. Sabines loyalty to Ailesse makes me a long for a friendship I wish I had. the ending was satisfying enough to make you not question anything, but still wanting to pull the thread that was left behind.
