Felt very "high fantasy", and I'm not a huge high fantasy fan. Too many POVs, too many characters in general. Great writing, just not my thing.

Pros:
-I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of detail in the characters and their backstories/motivations. I quite liked all of them.
-I appreciated that the story wasn't too bulky for all the different character perspectives. Several events were detailed after the fact and it didn't feel like the story lost anything from it.
-Characters weren't overpowered even though they easily could have been written that way.

Cons:
-The plot was a little predictable, largely from the dramatic irony established from the multi-perspective storytelling.
-I did feel like there was a little too much focus on the romances, I want to learn more about the world and what using magic is like.

You know, mutual "I'm too dangerous, defiled, unworthy for this beautiful perfect being" is apparently my jam. I love to see those men pine from the shadows and then see them stand in gobsmacked awe when they realize that their feelings are actually reciprocated. I really enjoyed Tris and Bet. I thought Rhiannon and Sidonie were lovely side characters, as was Gillian (whom I'm hoping she gets her happily ever after with a certain individual I won't name in the next book). And little Roland (though too mature for his age) was still marvelous. All in all, I can't wait for more.

This is my 2nd attempt with this. First time I DNFed around 12% (on March 10th, 2020)

So it took me 3 days to finish this, not because of lack of time but for a lack of interest.

Unfortunately what I deducted from reading and dnfing the story at 10% is completely true for the whole of it.

Narration did not make things better, especially since I didn't particularly care for the female narrator! Don't get huffy there are some incredible female narrators out there but Lessa is not one of them, and opposite Tremblay, yeah well no competition there.

Maybe the story picks up in the other 2 books of the series but I don't really wanna go through the whole thing with 20 characters of which I only care for 3-4 of them.

This book has multiple POV that follows different characters through different subplots that all link up and interact, so there are a lot of characters to love and I loved them all.
