I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Dodson is very clear in showing how gospel-centred living is not driven by license or legalism but instead delight in, and devotion to, Christ. Chapters 1-4 are superb. Chapter 5 on the Holy Spirit is very good although I'm not totally sure about his emphasis on praying to the Spirit to the degree he advocates. Chapter 6 was the problem chapter for me - I agree with many of his conclusions but I'm doubtful about some of the hermeneutics he used to get there. Chapter 7 & 8 are where things get even more practical and he makes a number of good recommendations for pursuing discipleship together in the church. I especially appreciate his desire in chapter 7 to promote a high view of both word and Spirit.

What is discipleship? I could never really define it or describe it until I read this book. If you are mentoring or discipling someone, this is an incredible help.

A really good book with so much truth and good teaching on how to practice true discipleship by keeping the gospel central. Found the “fight club” concept at the end interesting. Should come back to this one.

Simple, helpful, practical. The chapter on the Holy Spirit was one of the best I've ever read.

Great book on discipleship. Even though I've slowly become less of a fan of the "gospel-centered" term, Dodson explains what he means concerning "gospel-centeredness" well and keeps everything rooted in Scripture and Christ. In general, Dodson is explaining in this book how Christ's good news applies to discipleship. That we are not to be legalistic or licentious disciples, but disciples that focus on the gospel and strive to be shaped into the image of Christ. Yet, this book serves more as a course correction, a reminder that the center of discipleship is the gospel, rather than a foundational text for Christian discipleship. Christians seeking a foundational or introductory book to Christian discipleship I would encourage to look elsewhere, but Dodson's book is still a good contribution.

The goal of the gospel is not only to save us, but to sanctify us.

That is the entire premise of Gospel-Centered Discipleship. It is a good premise. And there are some good nuggets in this book. But the writing is somewhat dry and there is very little new here. The latter chapters were quality but the introductory ones were a bit slow.

It's a book I took my leadership students through and it opened up some good conversations. I wouldn't recommend it to too many people though.

First half was excellent. Second half, less so.
