I enjoyed this book! It was a really good look at the immigrant experience and the expectations vs reality aspect. I think it's very much relevent today as well - behind closed doors attitudes haven't progressed much further than what's described in the book. It would have been 5* but the ending through me off. Hopefully, I'm able to continue Adah's story when I read In The Ditch!

4.5. this was my, like, third attempt of reading this a second time and thankfully I followed through. adah is such a treasure. it's hard to take in the fact that she's in her early twenties throughout the majority of her stay in england. she went through so much.
this novel really emphasizes the point of this post I saw on my instagram feed recently. the abuse of women would not be as widespread if other cis men with all their patriarchal power were not indifferent when confronted with it. this ended far too abruptly (and more importantly, did not give adah the happy ending she deserved, which is rather strange for the author, considering how important she considers writing pick-me-up novels). I could probably dissect this novel a whole lot further but I don't have the time or the mental energy for that.

Such a powerful and personal read, wow. Adah’s character is brilliant and it was wild to think about what she went through all before turning 20.
The only thing that kept this from being a 5-star read was the end. Each chapter had finished with a bang so I assumed the final page would do the same, but it fell flat compared to the rest of the book.
