Read this just in time to catch the musical performed this evening. There's a sort of poetry to Bechdel's storytelling, weaving scenes and phrases and ideas together with a lyrical nonlinearity. Bechdel presents a compelling narrative of not only her own life but its parallels with that of her father, who represents to her both Icarus and Daedalus of myth. Given that her father was an English teacher, it seems only natural that Bechdel should draw on literary metaphors to tell her own story, and she does so with a thoughtful self-awareness. Lovely, dark, humorous, and beautiful. I can hardly wait to see it on stage.

I liked are you my mother a lot more. I connected with the material much more.

Honestly? Just a bit bored.

I’m having a hard time trying to put my finger on my feelings about this graphic novel memoir.

I feel like it would’ve worked better as just a straight memoir honestly. I liked some aspects where it was in this format but some of it just didn’t work. It took a long time for me to push through this. Also I didn’t like that it was only one color grade throughout it. There’s talk of sunsets and sunrises and it’s just not there because of it being one color. Also letters from her father where the writing is 95 percent illegible didn’t work well.

While I found the importance of her story and talking about her father and herself when it comes to sexuality. And we can see some of the literature references work, not everyone has read them and it can be a bit confusing.

I just feel meh. Like I like it but really don’t.
